Guide

Before a new gas appliance is connected, a gas technician checks that the BTUs it uses fit what the gas line to your house supplies along with everything already on it. In Ontario, the work is for a TSSA-certified gas technician working for a TSSA-registered contractor. Jackman Mechanical's typical price for a natural gas line to a BBQ is $1,000 to $5,000, and a buried line needs locates before anyone digs.

## Can my gas line handle another appliance?

It depends on how many BTUs (British thermal units) the appliance you are adding uses, compared with what the gas line to your house supplies. Every gas appliance has its input rating on its label, in BTUs per hour. Whatever gas appliances you already have, a furnace or a water heater most often, draw on the same supply, so the new one has to fit in what is left while the others run. A gas technician checks that before it is hooked up. An outdoor fire pit or a pool heater is fine on natural gas as long as your gas supply has enough to run those appliances as well.

## Who may connect a gas appliance in Ontario?

A TSSA-certified gas technician holding a G2 or G1 certificate. The TSSA says gas appliance work in Ontario must be done by TSSA-registered contractors, who must hire TSSA-certified gas technicians [(TSSA)](https://www.tssa.org/repeat-offender-convicted-unlicensed-gas-appliance-work-ontario-homes). That covers the new gas line, the connection, and converting an appliance from propane. The [gas work guide](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/guides/who-can-work-on-gas-ontario/) shows how to check a company first.

## What does a new gas line cost?

**Jackman Mechanical's typical prices, October 2026**

| Job | Typical price | What changes it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Furnace repair](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/faq/#furnace-repair-cost) | $450 to $1,500 | The repair |
| [A new furnace](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/faq/#new-furnace-cost) | $4,000 to $7,000, all in | The size of the furnace |
| [A natural gas line for a BBQ](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/faq/#bbq-gas-line-cost) | $1,000 to $5,000 | The size of the line and how far it runs |
| [Moving or capping a gas line](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/faq/#move-or-cap-gas-line-cost) | $400 to $1,000 | Where it moves to and the size of the line |
| [Any other gas line](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/faq/#gas-line-installation-cost) | Priced after a look | How much piping, the pipe size and the work |

These are typical ranges, not a quote. Each job is priced directly with you, and when a job is quoted, the written estimate comes before the work starts, as the [estimates and payments page](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/terms/) explains.

A BBQ line moves with the size of the line and how far it runs. Any other gas line depends on how much piping is installed, the size of the pipe and what needs to be done, so a gas technician has to see it to price it. A photo of your gas meter and of the spot where the appliance will go is the fastest start, sent with the [request form](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/request/?problem=gas).

## Do I need a permit for a new gas line?

Not a City of Toronto permit for the gas line itself, in Jackman Mechanical's experience. What the law fixes is who does it, above. Two cases are different. A furnace replacement is a permit in Toronto and often elsewhere (the [furnace replacement guide](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/guides/replacing-gas-furnace-toronto/) has each city). And Mississauga lists a gas fireplace used for heating among the projects that need a building permit, while a decorative gas fireplace is on its list of projects that do not [(City of Mississauga)](https://www.mississauga.ca/services-and-programs/building-and-renovating/building-permits/when-a-building-permit-is-required/).

## Does a buried BBQ or pool heater line need a locate?

Yes, before anyone digs, and the free locate will not find the line once it is in. Ontario Dig Authority, which was called Ontario One Call until October 1, 2026 [(Ontario Dig Authority)](https://ontariodigauthority.ca/initiatives-overview/rebrand/), says a public utility locate is required before any digging, at least 5 business days ahead for a single address, and that it is free [(Ontario Dig Authority)](https://ontariodigauthority.ca/locates-overview/). That locate marks the lines the utilities own. Gas lines to BBQs or pool heaters are private: Ontario Dig Authority lists them as private infrastructure the property owner must arrange a private locate for.

**Who marks which buried line before you dig**

| Buried line | Who marks it | Cost |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Enbridge Gas's line to your meter, and other utilities | Each utility, after a request to Ontario Dig Authority | Free |
| A gas line from the house to a BBQ, fire pit or pool heater | A private locate company you hire | A charge applies |

Enbridge Gas says private lines installed by you or a contractor, such as a gas line from your house to a pool heater or barbecue, are not included and need a separate locate from a private locate company, for a charge [(Enbridge Gas)](https://www.enbridgegas.com/ontario/safety/before-you-dig). Its advice for any project: never assume your contractor has requested the locate, and ask to see it. Once your own BBQ line is in, keep a note or a photo of the route it takes; it is the one buried gas line on the property that nobody will mark for free.

## Can I convert my propane BBQ to natural gas?

Yes, you can, with the natural gas conversion its maker approves for that model. Not every grill has one, so check the model before you plan the line. The conversion and the new natural gas line to the BBQ are gas work for a certified gas technician.

## Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm for a new gas appliance?

If it is the home's first fuel-burning appliance, yes: the Government of Ontario says a home with a fuel-burning appliance needs a working alarm beside each sleeping area and, since January 1, 2026, on every storey [(Government of Ontario)](https://www.ontario.ca/page/carbon-monoxide-safety). An alarm does not detect a gas leak, though: Enbridge Gas says carbon monoxide alarms detect carbon monoxide, not natural gas [(Enbridge Gas)](https://www.enbridgegas.com/ontario/safety/smell-gas). The [alarm guide](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/guides/carbon-monoxide-alarms-ontario/) has where each one goes.

## What if I smell gas near the new appliance?

Get everyone out right away, leaving doors and windows open behind you if you can do it without delay, and do not use phones, switches or anything electronic on the way out. Once you are safely away, call Enbridge Gas's 24-hour emergency line at [1-866-763-5427](tel:+18667635427) or 911 (same Enbridge source). When the gas has been made safe, a gas technician such as Jackman Mechanical finds and fixes the leak.

## What does Jackman Mechanical do for gas appliances?

Installs, repairs and maintains gas lines and gas equipment: lines for stoves, dryers, BBQs, heaters and other appliances at home, on the [gas lines page](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/residential/gas-lines/), and gas equipment for restaurants and buildings, on the [commercial gas page](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/commercial/gas/). Moving or capping an existing line is typically $400 to $1,000, depending on where it is being moved and the size of the line.
