For homes

Jackman Mechanical Ltd. installs, repairs and maintains gas lines and gas equipment in Toronto homes, and in North York, Mississauga, Markham and Ajax: a line for a new gas stove, dryer, BBQ or heater, a line moved in a renovation, or a repair to one that is there. A gas smell is never a request: leave the building and call Enbridge Gas from outside.

## Smell gas? Leave now.

Enbridge Gas says to evacuate right away, leaving doors and windows open behind you if you can do it without delay, and not to use phones, switches or electronics on the way out. Once you are safely away, call its 24-hour emergency line at [1-866-763-5427](tel:+18667635427) or 911 [(Enbridge Gas)](https://www.enbridgegas.com/ontario/safety/smell-gas). Natural gas has an added smell like rotten eggs, and a hissing sound can also mean a leak. Call us for the repair after.

## Who is allowed to install a gas line in Ontario?

Not just anyone. The TSSA, which regulates fuels safety in Ontario, says maintenance of furnaces and fuel-fired appliances must be performed by TSSA-registered contractors, and that all registered contractors are required to hire TSSA-certified gas technicians [(TSSA)](https://www.tssa.org/repeat-offender-convicted-unlicensed-gas-appliance-work-ontario-homes). Its [registered fuels contractor search](https://www.tssa.org/fuels-contractor) lets you check a company first. The [gas work guide](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/guides/who-can-work-on-gas-ontario/) explains it in full.

## What will the request form ask about a gas line?

**Questions on the request form for gas line or appliance problems**

| Question | The choices |
| --- | --- |
| What is it for? | BBQ · Stove · Dryer · Heater · Something else |

**Photos that help.** The most useful are where the appliance will go, and your gas meter.

Say in the description where the appliance will go and where your gas meter is. If it is a BBQ, say which side of the house the deck or patio is on.

## What does a gas line to an appliance look like?

*Illustration of a typical installation, not a drawing of a specific job.*

Gas comes in through the meter and regulator outside, runs as a tagged line inside, and drops to each appliance through its own shutoff valve, with a drip leg below it. A photo of your meter and of the spot where the appliance will go shows us most of what we need to see.

## Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a gas appliance?

Yes. The Government of Ontario says a home with a fuel-burning appliance must have a carbon monoxide alarm beside each sleeping area and, since January 1, 2026, on every storey, including storeys without bedrooms [(Government of Ontario)](https://www.ontario.ca/page/carbon-monoxide-safety). The [alarm guide](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/guides/carbon-monoxide-alarms-ontario/) covers where they go and what to do when one sounds.

## What do people ask about natural gas lines?

The questions Jackman Mechanical hears most, in its own answers. The prices are typical ranges, not a quote; each job is priced directly with you.

### How much does gas line installation cost in Toronto?

It depends on how much piping is installed, the size of the pipe and what needs to be done, so a gas technician has to see it to price it. [Send a request](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/request/?problem=gas) with a photo of your gas meter and the spot where the appliance will go, or call.

### How much does it cost to install a natural gas line for a BBQ?

Typically $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the size of the gas line and how far it runs.

### Who can install or connect a gas stove in Toronto?

A TSSA-certified gas technician holding a G2 or G1 certificate. The TSSA says gas appliance work in Ontario must be done by TSSA-registered contractors, who must hire TSSA-certified gas technicians [(TSSA)](https://www.tssa.org/repeat-offender-convicted-unlicensed-gas-appliance-work-ontario-homes).

### Can I convert my propane BBQ to natural gas?

Yes, you can, with the natural gas conversion its maker approves for that model. The conversion and the new natural gas line to the BBQ are gas work for a certified gas technician.

### What should I do if I smell natural gas in my house?

Get everyone out of the house right away. Enbridge Gas says to leave doors and windows open behind you if you can do it without delay, and not to use phones, switches, lights or anything electronic on the way out. Once you are safely away, call its 24-hour emergency line at [1-866-763-5427](tel:+18667635427) or 911 [(Enbridge Gas)](https://www.enbridgegas.com/ontario/safety/smell-gas). When the gas has been made safe, a gas technician such as Jackman Mechanical finds and fixes the leak.

### Do I need a permit or inspection for a new gas line in Toronto?

Not a City permit for the gas line itself, in Jackman Mechanical's experience. What matters is who does it: a TSSA-certified gas technician, G2 or G1, working for a TSSA-registered contractor [(TSSA)](https://www.tssa.org/repeat-offender-convicted-unlicensed-gas-appliance-work-ontario-homes). Replacing a furnace is different: Toronto Building lists it as a stand-alone HVAC permit, in the [permits guide](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/guides/plumbing-heating-permits-toronto/).

### Can my existing gas line handle another appliance?

It depends on how many BTUs (British thermal units) the appliance you are adding uses, compared with what the gas line to your house supplies. A gas technician checks that before it is hooked up.

### How much does it cost to move or cap a gas line?

Typically $400 to $1,000, depending on where it is being moved and the size of the gas line.

### Can I run natural gas to an outdoor fire pit or pool heater?

Yes, as long as your gas supply has enough to run those appliances as well.

### Why is my natural gas bill so high?

In the heating season you use more gas than in summer. A high bill can also mean appliances that are not very efficient.

The furnace questions, and all the typical prices in one table, are on the [common questions page](https://www.jackmanmechanical.com/faq/).
